Wacken Metal Battle USA

Doors 7PM // First band 8PM

5 bands // $10 door

For over a decade at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival, Wacken Open Air in Germany, independent metal bands from around the globe have been performing in front of thousands and competing against one another for one to be crowned champion of the world along with winning multiple prizes (prizes info). For the second year, Wacken Metal Battle USA is returning to America and will be hosting qualifying rounds in select cities across the nation. The national champion of those battles will perform at the 2018 festival taking place from August 2nd through the 4th in Wacken, Germany.

8:00pm –  Incest Burner
– An orgy of mass suicide

9:20pm –  Altar of Dagon
– When you listen to Altar of Dagon: Be prepared for a voyage to places that exist only in your Darkest Nightmares and Fantasy Realms. Heavy guitar riffs, thunderous bass and drums and eerie, clean vocals, primal screams, and backing abyssal gutturals give you an idea of what Altar of Dagon is all about!

While inspired by metal mainstays Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, and Nevermore, they also incorporate heavier elements of thrash, black, and death, citing Slayer, Nile, and Morbid Angel as the source. The band’s lyrical content is based on Sci-fi and Fantasy themes, such as H.P. Lovecraft and Old Sci-fi films, as well as tales of their own design.

Over the last 4 years alone, they have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with bands such as: Ashes of Ares, Tim “Ripper” Owens, Death Angel, 3 inches of Blood, Revocation, Battlecross, Into Eternity, Corrosion of Conformity, Mobile Death Camp, Goatwhore, Diamond Plate, HARP, Givethemrope, Infernal Opera, Into the Void and many more. They are hard at work on their next Full length NETHERA that will be out in 2018!

10:10pm –  Symetria
– Old school metal never died, it went back to it’s home in New Jersey, where it belongs. The land of Method of Destruction (M.O.D.), TT Quick, Overkill and legendary metal label, Megaforce Records, the genre is safe once again after flailing about aimlessly for the better part of the last two decades.

Rising to the top of the current throng of hopefuls is newcomers Symetria. While the Garden State quintet may be fresh out of the box, the wealth of talent and the ability to deliver within their ranks put them a step ahead of the competition is there. Core members Vince Santonastaso and Kevin Gust met through a Craigslist ad and after playing covers from the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Metallica, Santonastaso knew there must be more to life. Guitarist Cust followed him out the door and gave an old friend of his, Fernando Carrera a call, who came on board shortly after. The search for a drummer began and Blair Smith was quickly found on Bandmix, solidifying the initial Symetria lineup.

11:00pm – The Age Of Truth
– The Age Of Truth is a band, a brotherhood and a mission. Four brothers-in-arms from Philadelphia united in the singular pursuit of making the most honest heaviness this broken world can handle. As our modern lives bathe us in constant unraveling lies and deceptions, the truth in the heaviness they create makes them clean.

With a fully stocked arsenal of riffs wrapped in a tone of honey dipped Satan, The Age Of Truth blends fuzz and diesel fuel with elements of heavy blues, stoner rock and psychedelia. The perfect soundtrack for a barroom brawl that they know only as…the heaviness.

11:50pm – Lör
– Progressive Folk Power Metal Band from Philadelphia
Lör offers a unique blend of power, folk, and progressive metal. They have been performing around the region for the last 5 years and are now unveiling their debut album, In Forgotten Sleep on August 11th. Members of Lör are active in many other acts such as Ashen Waves, Top Hats and Effigies, and Botis.

*How it works:*
Each city will hold their qualifying rounds plus city finals, selecting the top band to move forward to the national final (city and date to be

determined) with one being selected to perform at the 29th edition of Wacken Open Air. All bands will be judged during battle rounds by respected local music industry.

Overall Performance:
This would be how well the band gels onstage.  Are they tight?  Are they entertaining to watch?  What is their level of showmanship?

What does this band bring to the scene that’s new in respect to the genre they claim to represent?

Does the band excel with musical prowess and abilities?

Is the idea of the band clear and focused.  Does their image do a good job at representing their sound?  Are they marketable?

Crowd reaction/Interaction:
Does the crowd seem to be enjoying the performance?  Is the band putting an effort into communicating with the audience?

Time Efficiency Onstage:
Does the band balance the use of their time well between addressing the crowd between songs and performing?  Do they take too long to set up or hinder the next band’s starting time because of changeover delays they’re responsible for?
